The gibs are the movable part of the dove tail on your head stock where is slides on the ways. I am not sure how Taig does it on their mill. On my Taig lathe there are two screws with lock nuts on the back side of the saddle. To tighten or losen the gibbs you losen the nuts and either backout the screws or tighten them as needed.

Tweet. #4. 03-08-2005, 11:03 AM. I have both, a Sherline 5400 manual mill and a Taig CNC mill. They are both great little mills, the sherline is well made but a little smaller. I went with the Taig for CNC because the leadscrews are much larger. I felt this would lead to less backlash and backlash wear.
Saturday, February 13, 2010. I have a post up at my other blog showing how I made some bit brace adapters for a friend. The setup involved mounting a 5C collet block at a slight angle in the Taig mill. The collet block needs a stop against it for repeatability. Milling the tang of one of the adapters. You get the idea. 5C collet blocks are handy.

It's slow going working on a 40mmx40mmx70mm piece on aluminium on my Taig mill. The X-nut holder will be bolted from underneath as this is the only way I can see that the alignment can be adjusted for. Also, because of the low profile and lack of headroom, the hole in the nut holder will only be 20mm to clear the screw.

Taig takes the returned parts and adds new XY tables, new lead screws, and I don't know what else to turn them into a refurbished manual mill. It sells at about a 40% discount to new. SOLD. The mill came with everything needed to start cutting metal: Mill, Vice, Collets, a few End Mills, etc.

Adding a Lead Screw and Power Feed Taig now offers a lathe equipped with a power feed, but it was a little different from what I needed. I wanted a design that used the more conventional half-nut to engage/disengage with the screw. The lead screw also needed to disengage from whatever gear chain or motor that would be driving it.

TAIG is the cheapest CNC mill that you can buy unless you convert a mini mill to CNC one. Weighing in at 105 lbs, this mill is significantly heavier than the Sherline mill which is only 33 lbs. The travel length of this mill is 12" on X-axis and 5.5" …

The ¾´ extension of the Y axis table travel on the Taig mill is made possible by the fact that the lead screw on the Y axis is longer than needed for the 5 ½´ stock Y axis travel. Additionally, the Y axis ways are long enough to accommodate the additional travel. The saddle ways will overhang the fixed ways by a small amount when
For years, Taig has sold their machines with a leadscrew and a brass nut that could be tensioned to cut down the backlash. Backlash still remains an issue for the pickiest machinists, though; so ...
Just like the Sherline mills, TAIG is equally popular among hobbyists and makers in US and Canada. The TAIG 2019 is a benchtop mill that is christened as "micro mill" and is priced at $2,495. It can cut aluminum, steel and titanium, among other materials. ... Lead screws provide better responsiveness but are privy to backlash on the nuts.
The drilling tail stock just happens to be great for clamping 1/2" lead screws if you remove the ram and lever first. A mill was colleted (?) and drill and tap was chucked in the head stock end and the work fed into these by sliding the tail stock in by hand. With the guide fitted the assy., was reconnected to the gear box and now the carriage ...

The Sherline will frequently drop the z axis into a part with varying unpleasant consequences. The lead screws on the Sherline are tiny and if you do rapid moves especially on the Y axis they will whip around and beat on the mill unless you add a restraint. The Taig moves at 60 inches per minute without a tremor.
The tool holder is modified from an existing Taig tool post which I have recovered from an unsuccessful ball turning jig made earlier. Or it can be made quite easily from a block of aluminium. 21 mm is cut from the bottom of the Taig tool post, and 5 mm is cut from the back (opposite side of the tool slot), reducing it to 25 mm wide, 20 mm deep and 24 mm tall.
chucked up the end of the lead screw shaft in a Makita. In four or five minutes of forward and reverse on the drill the back lash nut seated in nicely. If you do this, be careful not to muck up the threads on the end of the shaft. After putting everything back together, I bolted the column to the base and used a square to get it in the ball park.
Taig Mill Z Axis Air Spring Setup. ... I've got Z backlash set to .0002, which seems to be needed just to allow for a teeny bit of slop/friction in the lead nut. The head itself isn't going *anywhere* in terms of backlash. Note that I am running a 425oz-in stepper on Z. I'm not sure that a significantly-smaller stepper would be able to deal w ...
Taig Micro Lathe - Lowest cost by far including the accessories, especially if you have access to cheap electric motors. The main disadvantages, no lead screw, it uses a rack and pinion to move the carriage. Also the compound slide is a bit on the weak side, you only have to use it though, if your making angled cuts.
Mill or file off the face of the block that shows the half thread until it will fit snug (not tight) when pressing it onto your piece of left hand leadscrew rod. Drill a 1/4" hole into the back of the half nut block, as deep as you can, but do not break through into the threads on the other side of the hole.
Taig has just released a ballscrew option for the mill. The ballscrews are precision matched with the ball bearings resulting in nearly zero backlash and low friction operation. As the ballscrew mills have about half of the drive reduction as the leadscrew version we are using 276-oz in motors which are a better match for the motion profile.

The mill didn't fair too badly, but the end of the x-axis lead screw was bent slightly and the nut on the end of it was a bit mangled. Everything seems to be alright, but I'm debating putting in a claim since it was insured. Below is a picture of the mangled box that the mill came in and the end of the lead screw that was damaged.
